Protecting Our Loved Ones: A Closer Look at Strokes in the Elderly

According to the National Institute on Aging, strokes are the leading cause of serious adult disabilities. They can happen at any age, but the risk increases significantly as we grow older. Strokes are medical emergencies — but the majority are preventable, and effective therapies can help reduce stroke-related disabilities when treatment is prompt.

How Strokes Occur

Strokes happen when there's a disruption in normal blood flow to the brain, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. There are two main types:

  • Ischemic Strokes — Occur when a blood vessel supplying the brain is blocked by a clot. The leading causes include thrombosis (a clot in a neck or brain vessel), embolism (a clot traveling from elsewhere in the body), and stenosis (narrowing of a blood vessel from fatty deposits).
  • Hemorrhagic Strokes — Caused by a ruptured blood vessel that bleeds into or around the brain.

Recognizing the Signs — Act F.A.S.T.

If you notice any of the following sudden symptoms, call 911 immediately — even if they don't seem to last long:

  • Confusion or difficulty understanding speech
  • Trouble speaking or finding words
  • Face, arm, or leg numbness or weakness — especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  • Difficulty walking, loss of balance or coordination
  • Vision problems in one or both eyes

Stroke Prevention

Most strokes are preventable with healthy lifestyle choices: regular physical activity, a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, proper hydration, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes management, and avoiding tobacco. Regular health check-ups allow for prompt management of risk factors before they become emergencies.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery timelines vary widely depending on the patient's age, prior health, and the severity of brain damage. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are all key components of the rehabilitation process. Patience, consistency, and family support make a meaningful difference.
